PSA: bot comments are taking over ao3

image

The above examples have been provided with the authors' permission to demonstrate what these look like.

Basic rundown:

  • They are all 3 sentences long
  • Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation
  • Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever
  • No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story
  • The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post

Please spread the word about this so authors can filter comments and report them accordingly

There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate

I’ve confirmed that Mark Zuckerberg is serious about fighting @elonmusk and is now waiting on the details (if Musk decides to follow through) “The story speaks for itself,” a Meta spokesperson says re: Zuck’s IG post saying “send me location”https://t.co/4g1IkqOl47 — Alex Heath (@alexeheath) June 22, 2023ALT

Zuckerberg is in such better shape than Musk, and is trained in combat sports. This will be humiliating if Elon shows up

I think the rich should engage in bloodsport for the entertainment of the masses more often. Let's get Kissinger and Cheney into a ladder match.

“What News Story Are They Burying?”

Reminder that if a billionaire CEO does something outrageous in the news, this should always be your first question.

Today that news story is that Meta, Zuckerberg’s company, is blocking all news content in Canada for Facebook and Instagram due to a new law requiring compensation to news publishers. Facebook is using its vast resources to apply public pressure to stop the laws of a foreign government and protect its profit margins. And they are getting sued by Malaysia.

this whole titanic sub is so fascinating, because there really is so much to it, and a lot of emotions at play.

the fact that the more reporters investigate OceanGate, the clearer it is that the company is incredibly at fault and this completely could have been avoided if they had bothered with the necessary safety measures. the thing's controlled with an x box controller.

the class divide at play because the only tourists that can afford the expedition are billionaires. I was talking to a friend earlier and I said I didn't get how their self preservation instincts didn't kick in beforehand, because I think most people would look at that tiny sub and a think of that waiver they signed that said "this company's not legally responsible if you die a horrible death" and be like "no thanks." and she said it's probably because of pride, because it wouldn't occur to people that privileged and entitled that they were about to do something incredibly stupid. the goddamn CEO's on board.

the fucking sheer irony of it being the titanic. the fact that the titanic is also a symbol of class divide as well as a mass grave for over a thousand people, most of whom (who died during the wreck) were crew members or third class passengers. I saw someone on here who put it- the titanic is a monument to man's hubris, and the sub is just making the same mistakes all over again. we learned nothing.

and finally just the visceral horror of it. if they're alive, they are in hell. they are stuck in a metal tube thirteen thousand feet below sea level, with not even enough room to stand up. I'm no expert about what it would feel like to be imploded due to water pressure, but I think I would rather die quickly than roll around the ocean floor in a metal coffin with no food no bathrooms and a dwindling air supply for four days. like another someone said- they are living in a Magnus Archives episode.

like I don't want this teenager and his dad to die, and I hope they find them, but it has become crystal clear that the whole thing is a Huge Mistake by everyone involved.

Ok I know everyone's enjoying the submersible full of capitalists sinking to the bottom of the sea but like, can we pls bear in mind:

  1. One of the passengers is a 19 year old boy whose father bought him along
  2. The Titanic itself was not full of rich people either - most passengers who died were middle and lower class immigrants from Eastern Europe and Ireland looking for a better life in the USA

if you don't do anything else today,

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.

have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.

and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.

This is Juneteenth.

white people CAN interact with this post. share it, spread it.

48hr tumblr blackout proposal

tumblr mobile has seadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.

examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it "working"), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the 'for you' page.

the demands of the protest would be along the lines of:

  • reverse the recent image viewer update
  • scrap the new users 'for you' page default setting
  • let us turn off tumblr live indefinitely
  • increase efforts against spam / porn bots
  • make reporting abuse and hate speech as easy as reporting as reporting spam
  • let us go nuts show nuts again... for real this time
  • commit to improving usability and accessibility, and listening to users!
  • (suggestions welcome!)

to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don't use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.

I suggest the 48 hours between the 30th of June to the end of the 1st of July.

this marks the end of pride month (for the "queerest place on the internet") and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).

tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).

you can find out the times and dates for your timezone here.

i can't afford to blaze this post so please spread it around as much as possible! protests only work if significant numbers show up!

transmascanine

tumblr rejected the blaze campaigns for this post because they know it would hurt them. let's make this an indefinite blackout - it's the best way to get results.

(so the blackout would be from June 30th onwards)
